"Duchess "en Bateau" Stamped J. Nadal l'Ainé, Louis XV Period"
The splendor of the Louis XV period is captured in this magnificent duchesse by the famed French ébéniste Jean-René Nadal (1733-1783). Beautifully upholstered in blue velvet that complements the lacquered beige and light blue wood, this original 18th century settee reflects the change in style noticed in France during the reign of Louis XV. Relative to the flamboyant Rococo style of the Louis XIV period, furniture became lighter aesthetically in terms of both design and color. Highly ornamental, yet elegant, the style was more feminine and subdued than in previous years, and was designed with curving lines as seen in the present model. The duchesse was used by elegant women as a daybed and responded to a greater demand for ease and comfort. Our duchess sofa rests on eight curved legs ornamented with floral motif. Stamped "J. NADAL L'AÎNÉ".
