On July 25, 1794, condemned for having "concealed the papers of the Spanish ambassador", Chénier, thirty-one, was taken to the guillotine. The unfinished work of this young eighteenth century poet, published gradually from 1819, made him a major figure of Hellenism in France and an inspirer of the romanticism to which Victor Hugo paid homage.
