Object description :

"Important Giltwood Console Table Aix En Provence 18th Century Circa 1760"
Important console table in carved linden wood, gilded with burnished and amati leaf. Curved scalloped shape with strong overhangs on all its faces, the belt is only curved and counter-curved treated with openwork. This rests on an offset base; the hind legs falling out of the profile of the forelegs. All four follow the same philosophy as the belt, everything is only movements and arches resulting in atypical internal windings in the lower part. The whole is united by a harmonious work of fine sculptures in strong relief of vine branches loaded with heavy clusters nestled in opulent foliage treated in high relief and openwork. The middle part of the apron is decorated with a multi-lobed cartouche or united by a twining ribbon roses, peonies and daisies on a bed of thorny branches. The whole is topped with its original sheet of white marble with the most decorative and harmonious dense blue-gray veining. It should be noted the great care taken to the connecting elements of an irreproachable quality. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this very beautiful Aix console table. The specific work of the master sculptors of the Aix en Provence region gives this atypical table all its letters of nobility; one finds there the exuberance of the midday combined with the theatrical taste of a very Italian magnificence. Work from the country of Aix en Provence from the Louis XV period around 1750-1760 after drawings by Pierre Contant d'Ivry. Dimensions: Height: 88 cm; Length: 163 cm; Depth: 72 cm Pierre CONTANT d'IVRY, named “Architect of the King”, was a forerunner of the new trend that appeared in 1752, the “classicizing symmetrized rocaille” which lasted until 1760: one can notice on these consoles that the rocaille is tempered by strict symmetry. The cartouche of roses, peonies and daisies on a bed of thorny branches are typical of the productions of Pierre Contant d'Ivry, this one announces the arrival of classicism.
