Oil on cardboard representing the "Rue du grenier sur l'eau" in the Saint-Gervais district in Paris, signed "L Jonas 1945" lower right. Rue du Grenier-sur-l'Eau, which roughly follows the crest line of the Monceau St Gervais, with a length of 30 meters, is located in the 4th arrondissement, in the St Gervais district, and begins at 11 rue du pont Louis Philippe and ends at 17 rue des barre. Height: 63.5 cm Width: 48.5 cm Lucien Hector Jonas (1880-1947) is a painter of History and genre. In 1899, he entered the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. In 1929, he was named Knight of the Legion of Honor, and on July 6, 1932, he was named Air Painter. In 1933 he designed for the Banque de France the 10-franc minor notes and the 20-franc fisherman. In 1937, he produced sets for the Universal Exhibition in Paris and the portrait of Louis de Broglie. In 1942, he created an important tapestry box for the Manufacture des Gobelins: Le Travail pour la France. In 1944, he painted the portraits of Generals Koenig and De Larminat as well as that of General De Lattre de Tassigny. In 1945, at the Salon of French artists, he was awarded the painting medal of honor for a fourteen-meter-long fresco comprising some 120 characters, entitled Furor teutonicus. In 1946, Lucien Jonas was very ill and exhausted. Victim of eye inflammation, he dreads the light. He finished his fourteen paintings of the Stations of the Cross intended for the Saint-Martin church in Saint-Amand les Eaux.
