Louis Petit was a pupil of Monginot and Dameron. He exhibited regularly in Paris at the Salon des Artistes Français, of which he became a member in 1898. He obtained an honorable mention in 1900 at the Universal Exhibition in Paris, and a silver medal in 1914.
This work probably dates from the 1900's and has was exhibited in Langres, a town close to the artist's town of origin. He presents an intimate scene of a young woman discovering a letter. The delicacy of this work lies in part in the fact that this woman does not seem to pose for the artist, but rather seems captivated by her reading.
