"Sainte Marie-madeleine Italian School XIXth"
Large oil on canvas depicting Saint Mary Magdalene contemplating the crown of thorns resting on the shroud, the elbow resting on the book. This painting is similar to a work commissioned by Father Thomas Chandonnet (1834-1881) during his stay in Rome in 1866 for his parish in the province of Quebec, and which is now on display at the Musée des Religions du World in Nicolet, near Trois Rivières PQ. Our painting is different since Marie-Madeleine is represented semi-naked, but is indeed from the same hand as the above-mentioned painting. Our painting, on the other hand, was probably cut to put it in a more roomy format, because the returns on the stretcher are painted. Important wooden frame and gilded stucco. Repairs with floral decoration, openwork Rocaille style shells resting on a background of barley grains. Dimensions of the canvas 81x65 cm Total dimensions, with frame, 105.5x85.5 cm.
