Oil on canvas from the end of the 19th century, representing L'Ile Barbe (north of Lyon) in its original frame and signed G. Prevost, (Ecole Lyonnaise), lower right. The canvas and the frame are in very good condition. Île Barbe, on the Saône, north of Lyon, has been part of the territory of the municipality of Lyon since 1963. The first hermits sought solitude there, but from the 5th century on, an abbey was created, the Roman Church of Notre-Dame. Dame, one of the oldest in France who enjoyed the greatest fame in Carolingian times It is from the left bank of the Saône that one can appreciate the elegance of the square bell tower which is anchored on the span of the chancel, with its four-sided roof made of high acute triangles. It has openwork windows supported by small columns with Corinthian capitals. This bell tower, wrapped in the greenery of the garden, above a nonchalant Saône creates a certain charm which has not ceased to seduce painters since the 18th century.
