By its large size, it offers a strong presence. Monumental sculpture soon took hold of the theme of crucifixion or Calvary. At the origin of all calvary stand 3 figures: Christ, St Jean and Marie.
This Mater Dolorosa or Mother of Pain (who is standing), wears the veil and the gimp, as well as a long pleated coat. In a scene of crucifixion and prayer, her gaze turned towards what was the Cross, she places her joined hands, crossed, full of strength against her and expresses her suffering, her pain in restraint with a very softened vision and soothed.
The great fervor that emerges from this sculpture, the execution of the face, the hands, the drapes, make her a Virgin filled with sweetness and emotion.
This sculpture is in good condition with the wear and losses due to time, including those to his left probably due to the location at Calvary. It is in polychromed wood with many traces of color. Note a slit at a fold of the garment. Flat back.
