Beautiful view of Marrakech late nineteenth early twentieth Maurice Romberg De Vaucorbeil (1862-1943) Orientalist signed lower left biography Maurice Romberg De Vaucorbeil (1862-1943) 1862-1943: In 1887, he went to Tetouan then to Méknès. He then traveled throughout the Cherifian empire with the archaeologist Guy de la Martinière. In 1909, he resides in Algiers. He then stays in Morocco where he is the first European to live in Marrakech. He wears the Arab costume to assimilate to the population. He painted Maghrebi architecture which sometimes caused him some problems when it came to painting mosques: he was attacked by the crowd at the Mensoûri mosque and only got out with the help of his servant. . He paints his sketches out of sight under his burnou. Scenes of royal processions, festivals but also landscapes are favorite subjects. He exhibits in Paris, Brussels or London. He traveled for several years in Mauritania.
