Son of a valid pupil of Ingres and a skilful miniaturist, Besnard is fatherless very young. His mother accustomed him from an early age to social evenings and at 17 he entered the School of Fine Arts at Atelier Cabanel. At 19, he made his debut at the Salon des Beaux Arts with great success. In 1874, he won the Grand Prix de Rome. The exhibition of the Portrait of Mrs. Roger Jourdain at the Salon of 1886 is the first manifestation of her personality now formed. In 1884 he created the decor for the School of Pharmacy and in 1889 he presented La femme qui se chauffé at the Salon. Other decorations, no less interesting, were ordered from him in the wedding halls of the mayor of the first arrondissement, the chemistry amphitheater at the New Sorbonne, at the Hôtel de Ville, at the Petit Palais. In addition to these commissions, Besnard also painted many portraits full of light and orientalist paintings. A trip to India gives him the opportunity to renew his work. From 1890 he stopped exhibiting at the Salon des Artistes Français, but at that of the National Society of Fine Arts of which he was one of the founders and vice-president from 1910 to 1913. From 1923 he was assiduous at the Salon d 'Automne and, since 1924 at the Salon des Tuileries. In 1914 he directed the Villa Medici in Rome, in 1922 he was appointed director of the National School of Fine Arts and in 1924 he became a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and the Académie Française.
