Johann Peter Krafft has become for Austrian painting of crucial importance. He was a leading classical-style history and portrait painter in Vienna, but he also later influenced the development of genre painting in the Viennese Biedermeier era (through his painting Die Heimkehr des Landwehrmannes, 1820). Krafft created important history images of patriotic content for Austria and its emperor house. He was eventually also active as a restorer in Schönbrunn Palace and the Jesuit Church in Vienna. Johann Peter Krafft affected the painting of Ferdinand George Waldmueller.
