Beautiful bright and finely detailed work, by the painter Edmond Picard who represents an Arlésienne on a terrace.
The artist was able to perfectly transcribe the play of light of a sunny day in Provence. During the years 1894 to 1897, the artist seems to have traveled to the South of France to paint genre scenes and landscapes in the region of Arles, Villefranche-sur-Mer as well as in the North. from Italy.
The bouquet of flowers placed on the ground on the terrace in our composition could have a particular symbolism.
Born in Besançon, Edmond Picard attended the municipal drawing school from the age of 13. In 1873, the landscape painter Alexandre Rapin encouraged him to continue his training in Paris. He then joined the School of Decorative Arts and then the studio of painter Jean Léon Gérôme at the Beaux-Arts in Paris. He continued his training in the studio of the painter Jean Paul Laurens, where he befriended the painter Henri Martin.
It was at the age of 20 that he presented his first work Salon. In 1885, he became the youngest winner of the Prix Troyon.
Attached to his region of origin, Edmond Picard assiduously participates in exhibitions organized in Besançon alongside painters Antonin Fanart, Théobold Chartran, Jean Adolphe Chudant, Alexis Meunier ... always a very good reception and are rewarded by the jury. The State will buy his works very regularly during the Salons.
His work consists on the one hand of scenes of rural life and landscapes of his native region of Franche-Comté and on the other hand of genre scenes and Parisian life.
From 1893, the artist turned to realism and naturalism.
His artistic career ended prematurely when he died at the age of 38. Works are kept in various museums in France such as the Roubaix Museum, Saint-Brieuc, the Orsay Museum in Paris ...
