His Excellency Prince Gazi-Igna Girei is a descendant of Genghis Khan from his father, Prince of Crimea. They lived in Batshi-Sarailh Castle, on the shores of the Black Sea, which later became the summer residence of the Soviet leaders. This is where the Yalta agreements were signed.
During the Bolshevik revolution of 1917 the family was expelled from Crimea and took refuge in Italy. The young Gazi then enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and visited the peninsula to learn about the painting of Italian masters. Gazi still hasn't finished his studies when his father dies in mysterious circumstances, most likely murdered by the Bolsheviks.
In 1920 Gazi moved to Paris, in the Latin Quarter and frequented the artists of Montparnasse. Around 1934 he meets Suzanne Valadon with whom, since 1935, he lives in Rue Lepic, in the house left by Utter, Valadon's former partner. Gazi considers her as a mother and her son Maurice Utrillo as her brother. In 1938, on Suzanne's death, he moved to Place du Calvaire. At this time, his works are very close to those of Utrillo, both for the subjects and for the material, but the drawing is more precise, drier.
The painting is in very good condition.
