Alexandre Bailly (1866-1947) Venice Oil on panel 26.5 x 17 cm signed lower right titled on the back "Italy (Venice)" Born in Paris, Alexandre Bailly is a French painter and decorator. He trained in the workshops of Auguste Rubé and Philippe Chaperon. In 1894, he joined forces with Marcel Jambon (1848-1908), a Parisian decorator, whose daughter he married Louise Suzanne. The workshop, located at 73 rue de Sécrétan, in Paris, 19th arrondissement, produces many sets for the biggest Parisian theaters such as the Opera from 1895, the Opéra-Comique from 1903 to 1924, or the Comédie. French ... With Marcel Jambon, Alexandre Bailly decorates famous plays and operas such as Ariane, Le Crépuscule des Dieux, Hamlet, Roma, Tristan and Isolde, Armide. He also works for the theater of the count of Clermont-Tonnerre, and for the arenas of Béziers. He travels through Europe, but also China, India, Japan. He was especially noted for his panorama "The Chinese Trans-Siberian" intended for the Universal Exhibition of 1900. In the 1920s, he joined forces with Henri Niépce and created sets for silent cinema.
