Pair Of Large Vases At Etrusca In XIXth Sevres Porcelain

Description:
Painted and gilded porcelain.

These vases are inspired by ancient pottery. A tripod lion's paw base supports the ovoid body. The handles are held by simulated links. A removable molded plinth wedges the three feet in circular edges. The whole vase is decorated with nets, arabesques, moresques as well as a cartouche concentrating these motifs and decorated in its center with a mascaron of Dionysus.
There was an Etruscan fashion in Paris in the 19th century, one thinks for example of the Etruscan pavilion at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
Moreover, the objects of the Grand Tour have no connection with Sèvres. But these vases are completely in the spirit of the staging of the "different and exotic" aesthetics of Antiquity that the Italian workshops made for travelers doing their humanities. These vases could also be an order in this spirit.
