"Henri Gabarret (xixth-xxth): "
Our painting is the interpretation of the painting "Children playing with dice" made in 1675 by Bartolomé Esteban Morillo (1617-1682). This was produced in 1914 by Henri Gabarret. It represents two young boys playing dice, a third eating a piece of bread, a dog at his feet waiting for a rest. The standing child is barefoot, one of the two players with a pierced sole, illustrating poverty, Murillo being known to have painted many scenes of everyday life featuring children and misery. Bartolomé Esteban Murillo is a 17th century Spanish Baroque painter. Along with Diego Vélasquez, Francisco de Zurbaran and José de Ribéra, he is one of the main representatives of the Spanish Golden Age and the leader of the Seville School, Spain's second artistic center in the 17th century after Madrid. Most of his works are of religious inspiration, but he is also known for his genre scenes featuring poor children in everyday life. On April 3, 1682, he fell from scaffolding while painting an altarpiece at the Capuchin Convent in Cadiz and died shortly after. He never left Seville. He is considered one of the greatest Spanish masters of the 17th century, and many of his paintings are in the greatest museums in the world such as London, Madrid, Saint Petersburg etc ...
