Philips Wouwerman, born in Haarlem in 1619 and died in the same city in 1668, is considered one of the most versatile and prolific artists of the Dutch Golden Age.His paintings were sought after during his lifetime, but also in the 18th century. The royal and princely collections of Versailles, Madrid, Dresden and Saint Petersburg have them. Art historian Duparc says of him that he is arguably "the most accomplished and successful Dutch horse painter of the 17th century." He is noted for his skill in depicting horses of all breeds in motion.
