Malachite Trinket Bowl. Russia, Late 19th Century

Very fashionable in the second half of the 19th century, malachite adorns all kinds of furniture and objects. This very soft rock, which is not easily sculpted, needs to be worked in marquetry. Russian lapidaries developed a stone-inspired marquetry capable of covering flat surfaces as well as raised surfaces, but far from the Italian aesthetic. Russian marquetry endeavors here to reproduce the natural pattern of the stone by fitting thin slats next to each other. The so-called “radial” pattern of our trinket bowl is recognizable by its beautiful ocelli. Good condition.
