François Verwilt Son of the painter Adriaen Verwilt (Antwerp 1582-1639). It is certain that Verwilt, like Johann Liss, Jan Baptist Weenix, Jan van Haensbergen and Daniel Vertangen, was a pupil of Cornelis van Poelenburgh (1586-1667) of Utrecht. Verwilt did not specialize exclusively in the history and landscape painting of his master. He actually painted a number of biblical religious scenes in landscapes like Poelenburgh, most notably a series of paintings of the Virgin Mary, which were more intended for a Catholic clientele (probably Flemish), but he also painted bourgeois festive interiors. and games as well as peasant genre painting scenes. There are also portraits and still lifes. His colors are cold enamel type, but later he also painted Rembrandt style paintings with chiaroscuro effects in brown tones. He mainly worked in Utrecht and Rotterdam, where he lived all his life. He also worked for a short time in Middelburg (Zealand) and was a member of the Guild of St Luke. His pupils were Cornelis Cingelaar and Peter Hovius. His works can be found in museums in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Haarlem, Budapest, Leningrad, Mainz, Osnabrück, Paris, Vienna. Inv. No. 8.876 23.500 €
