"Papua, Karaut Mouth Adornment, Abelam People"
This KARAUT is a mouth adornment used by Abelam warriors to scare their enemies. It is said that this was the prerogative of a man who had already killed in battle. They were then worn around the neck or on the back during customary ceremonies to display the warrior's status. This copy is particularly old and above all very well produced as are the prestigious objects of museum quality. The tusks of wild boar have a beautiful patina of use on the reverse.
