Object description :

"Pietà, Rhineland Around 1330."
Pieta, Rhineland around 1330.
In the Middle Ages, the Virgin mourning over her son was a popular devotional subject. Christ's body bears the marks of his Passion. The small scale of Christ may reflect the writings of German mystics, who believed that the Virgin, in the agony of her grief, imagined she was holding Christ as ababy once again in her arms.
