A Regence Walnut Table Early 18th Century,, Circa 1720.

A Regence Lyonnaise table in natural walnut and beech wood, carved, moulded and waxed. The table is rectangular in shape and opens from the front with a drawer that slides under the top in the middle of the belt. This one is made of four arched crosspieces, uniformly for the lateral ones, decorated with a "cul-de- lampes" for the longitudinal ones. These are finely carved with a shell decorated on both sides with voluble scrolls and fine foliage scrolls in perfect symmetry. The base with four slender, slightly arched legs is beautifully embellished with fine carving to match the aprons. The shoulder of each leg is adorned with an opulent concave shell generously embracing the curve of this; a deer hoof crowned with acanthus leaves, perched on a sphere, elegantly punctuates the whole. The top is made up of a cabaret bowl lined with two mobile angular appendages that fold into cavities provided for this purpose at the top right corner of each of the side rails. A reversible mobile panel forming a cap fits into the cabaret, the whole forming the top of the whole. Each side of the stopper is treated differently; one side is covered with old morocco leather and the other is covered with a sheet. - The concave cabaret bowl allowed the dice, when thrown, to always return to the centre of the game without leaving the table. - The two angular appendages were designed to hold candlesticks or candelabras in order to illuminate the game without hindering the shuffling of the cards; rounded they blocked the candlesticks. - The stopper made it possible to modify the destination of this one at will; on the morocco side, it was used as an elegant writing table, the cloth side as a pharaoh's game table or shadow. The very specific characteristics of this table are its rectangular shape and the presence of only two mobile angular appendages, which indicate that it was exclusively used for games of chance between two players; the square tables for four players are rarer and less classical. It is worth noting the great care taken with the connecting elements, which are of impeccable quality. Balance, nervousness, elegance and quality are the most appropriate terms for this elegant salon table from the early days of the Enlightenment. Typical work of the Lyon workshops of the first part of the 18th century from the Regency period around 1710-1715. This piece of furniture has been perfectly restored according to the rules of art in force at the beginning of the XVIIIth century.
