Max Moreau, son of the painter Henri Moreau, was born in Soignies on September 2, 1902. In 1905, the Moreau family moved to Brussels. His father took his son with him very early on to cabarets and theaters in the capital. In 1928, he married Félicie Leclercq, known as FéliaNotes 1. In 1929, he began a long series of trips. At each of these stages, he attended theaters there and produced works that he distributed more and more easily to the local bourgeoisie. He made five long stays in Tunisia from 1929 to 1938 during which he discovered the light of the Maghreb, a striking fact in his painting. In 1932, he staged one of his plays in Tunis, with the Essor troupe. It is a tragicomic play: "Tutus" in which he plays the leading role. It is a success. In 1933 and 1934, he exhibited at the Tunisian Salon during his stays. In 1943, he exhibited at the Salon d'Hiver in Paris two portraits of a doctor and illustrations for the poem "L'Apothicaire lyrique". In 1946, he lived in Nice for a while before the couple moved to Morocco, Marrakech, in 1947. They frequented in particular General Juin and his wife, the painter Jacques Majorelle, as well as the colonial bourgeoisie. In 1950, they settled in Paris and in March 1951, Max Moreau exhibited at the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune in Paris his major works brought back from Morocco. In June 1954, Max Moreau sent ten paintings to the Salon de l'Armée, without any dealing with a military subject, apart from the portraits of General Juin who became Marshal and his wife. In October 1954, the painter left alone to try his luck in New York, coached by Mrs Doane. After having garnered a lot of commissions for portraits of the gentry, his wife joined him at the beginning of February 1955. From 1956 to 1960, he returned four times to the United States, mainly to Palm Beach, where his portraits of the jet set brought him back. a lot of money. In October 1960, he exhibited at the Wildenstein Gallery in New York. From 1966 to 1981, Max Moreau carried out nine personal exhibitions in Spain, mainly in Granada, and four personal exhibitions in Belgium. From 1982, Parkinson's disease decreases in an increasing and definitive way the faculties of the painter who will never exhibit again. Max Moreau died in Granada on September 2, 1992. His wife died on December 8, 1994, and by testamentary execution, the entire estate of the Moreau couple fell to the city of Granada which transformed the carmen into the "Casa Museo Max Moreau", including The entrance is free. A good part of the workshop background is exposed there, and the painter's studio has been entirely preserved. Max Moreau exhibited in each of the countries he visited, and very often in Brussels. He made many portraits such as the ex-king of Italy, a Rockefeller girl, Jules Romains and many theater, film and opera artists: Pierre Dac, Noël Roquevert, Gino Cervi, Anthony Quinn, Tyrone Power , Henry Fonda, Madeleine Ozeray, Mylène Demongeot, Tito Gobbi, Graziella Sciutti, Pierre Nougaro ...
