This military scene represents General Bazaine's farewell to his staff during the capitulation of the Place de Metz in October 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War  This oil on panel is signed lower right Jean Alexandre Couder (Paris 1808-1879) This one entered the school of fine arts in 1824 in the workshop of Baron Gros and participated in the Paris Salon from 1833 to 1868. . He was recognized as a painter of genre scene history, but also of still lifes and flowers, an area in which he excelled. Table in good condition, cleaned and refinished presented in a contemporary golden frame. Oil: 27.5 cm X 55 cm With frame; 37cm X 53cm
