Object description :

"Eighteenth Carved Oak Lightning Lock Or Key."
Carved oak barrel lock with two dolphins symmetrically opposed by the central brass screw. This lock, also called barrel bar, is a production whose geographical origin extends from Alsace to the Palatinate in Germany. Period: end of the 18th century. The bolts that block the barrel cleaning gates were often carved either by the coopers themselves or by professional sculptors who also made the window frames or the decorations of the houses. The decorations most often feature marine beings, fish, dolphins, mermaids ... in connection with the mythology of the wine gods Bacchus and Dionysos. See google: The barrel of Prince Abbot François-Christophe von Hutten, Colmar museum. Dimensions: Length: 52 cm. Height: 19 cm. Depth: 16 cm. Weight 5.5 kg. Good general state of conservation.
