Amusing scene representing the carnival of the Giants, probably done on the occasion of his participation in the Universal and International Exhibition of Ghent, in 1913, where he received the diploma of Grand Prix (group III, class 12).

Painter, poster artist, illustrator, then mainly decorator and costume designer for the theatre. He was appointed artistic director of the Paris Opera in 1912. He was responsible for many set and costume designs for the Théâtre des Arts, the Comédie-Française, the Opéra-Comique, the Trianon-Lyrique (La Belle de Haguenau, 1924) and the Théâtre du Châtelet.
He had a close friendship with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, whose portrait he painted several times. The best known is the one in the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
Other works by Maxime Dethomas can be found in the Musée de Montmartre, the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Lille and Marseille.
