He entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris on August 29, 1821 and was a pupil of Hersent and Richomme.
In 1826, he obtained the "Prix de Rome" for engraving, while in 1833 and 1863 some of his paintings received medals.
In 1844 he visited Spain with Alexandre Dumas senior and in 1847 he traveled to Algeria and Egypt, painting typical animated scenes.
Appeared at the Salons from 1831 to 1866 with many portraits and history paintings.
He frequently attends the most important Parisian salons, in particular that of Princess Mathilde. In 1862, in Saint-Gratien, guest of the princess, friend sculptor Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux produced the plaster model of the bronze bust of Giraud (now kept at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris).
In the Parisian salons, Giraud liked to represent the celebrities of the time and all of these drawings and sketches constitute a precious iconography of the political, artistic and social society of the reign of Louis-Philippe in the Third Republic. Giraud's style is very successful and is frequently imitated.
On May 4, 1851, he was decorated with the Legion of Honor and in 1866, he was appointed an officer.
