Woodcut, XIXth (possibly earlier), The Martyrdom of Saint John, from the Apocalypse series of 1497-98 by Albrecht Dürer. According to tradition, Saint John was tortured in Rome, under the emperor Domitian, and plunged into a vat of boiling oil in front of the Porta latina. He was then banished to Patmos, an island in the Aegean Sea, where he wrote the text of Revelation. Engraving in very good condition. Dimensions of the engraving 40.9x29.4 cm Dimensions at sight in the master key, 39.5x28 cm. Old frame with chopsticks, 55.5x47.3 cm.
