He studied at the Neapolitan Academy: he was a pupil of Cammarano, Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palazzi, from the masters he received teachings that he never completely abandoned, in fact he was always influenced by the last Neapolitan nineteenth century even when circumstances led him to live for a long time in London and Paris.
Other climates, other experiences and the admiration for De Nittis, changed the color and forms of the indigenous tradition in the daily examination and he enriched his painting with new lymph.
The French choice (Corot), involves a profound transformation of his art and marks his period of maximum research which goes from 1935 to 1940.
Eugenio Scorzelli was, especially in his mature years, a withdrawn and discreet painter, jealous of his tranquility and not eager for special recognition, if not those - very coveted, necessary - of people he esteemed and to whom he was linked by ties. of affection and shared life; his talent and his rigor never led him to the banal, he always took care to close the "tones" in agreement with a considerable sonority and vibration and built the picture in a compositional way.
Portraits, figurative paintings, scenes of everyday life, landscapes, views of cities sum up his worthy production of more than forty years.
Particular, extremely sharp is his ability to "read" the interiors as significant images of life and the ailments that inhabit them and make them vibrate with emotions, to the point of making them intensely alive, even more alive than the characters who breathe. slowly they and, often, are silent; indeed, for a moment, each one is alone and likes to represent the painter so much, who hardly ever approaches the different figures of the same painting, as if he wanted to recognize each his own identity and to grasp it. absolute value as a person, as an inimitable and irreplaceable individual.
But Eugenio Scorzelli is intimately a painter and as such he approaches reality, first “feeling” it through his eyes. He is therefore attracted in particular by the play of light that is created, by the effects of chiaroscuro and backlighting, by new portions of reality that even a single ray can bring to life in the shadows.
For several years he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Naples and for fifteen years at the Academy of Brera.
