"James Coignard, Composition Ab, Original Etching Signed, Numbered & Enhanced By The Artist"
James Coignard (1925-2008), Composition "AB", (reported title), numbered 4/75, signed in pencil and enhanced by hand by the artist Magnétique composition on beige background studded with mineral droplets - dripping -, fine bruises mapping the dense paper of the Moulin de Larroque, slate-colored, blue, white, green gems; a large red strikethrough above the inscription AB, where two figures in the shape of black signs meet at its epicenter, like two abstract Dogon horsemen facing each other in the orchestrated chaos of savannah stripes crossed by Aegean blue. It is an engraving with a geological scope, stratifying different paintings, capital imaginary scenes in this eminently singular engraved decoration. Important original carborandum engraving, a process developed by the painter Goetz in 1967 which allows a very artistic inking on thicker relief and irregular papers which are "sculpted" by the matrix during printing; process which was masterfully implemented by James Coignard but also Miro or Clavé. After printing, the variations between proofs are even more striking. The singularity of each print is reinforced by the paint highlights that James Coignard brings to the prints that we offer for sale. Painter but above all exceptional engraver - of his own works -, master of art prints, James Coignard begins with ceramics, then sculpture, is akin to the School of Paris before breaking away from it and to meet a new and strong artistic path, which, from the 1960s, was accompanied by international recognition in the United States and Sweden. The Hervieu gallery gave him visibility in the Scandinavian countries. From the end of the 60s, the avenues offered by Goetz's process made him favor carborandum engraving in which he excelled. From now on it will be his main channel of artistic expression that he tirelessly and daringly explores until his death. In 1978, Coignard helped found the Pasnic workshop, a workshop for engravings and art prints. A major internationally recognized painter-engraver, his work, mostly engraved therefore, appears in museums around the world, Guggenheim, British Museum, San Francisco museum, BNF, etc. If Coignard was divided between Paris and the Riviera, in particular Beaulieu sur Mer then Antibes and Mougins where he died in 2008, he nevertheless remains better known internationally, in the USA - where he will live from 85 to 90 - and in Sweden. , than it is in France, and was a long-term collaboration with the Swedish gallery GKM Siwert Bergström.
