He was born in Saint-Omer (Pas-de-Calais) on September 9, 1871, and died in Paris on August 3, 1954. Student of Léon Bonnat at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, Abel Bertram excelled in portraits and nudes, as well as in landscapes, where he liked to represent his native region, in gray skies and hazy horizons. While remaining attached to pure colors, he uses a palette of imprecise yet terribly expressive tones. His style is often qualified as "very temperate fawn", having no need to exaggerate the line to convince of the accuracy of his words.
