"Aquarelle Att. à C. F. Lacroix De Marseille"
Superb little navy with watercolor enhanced with gouache, on laid paper, attributed to Charles François LACROIX DE MARSEILLE (1700-1779). This charming work, presented in a perfect state of conservation, shows a coastal landscape with a citadel in the foreground, revealing in the distance a Mediterranean city and a large ship returning to port. The scene is animated by many small characters, some busy around a boat returning from fishing, others at the seing of the fortifications overlooking the sea. All are treated with a lot of life in their attitudes, rendered with some extremely fine features, and the athmosphere emerging from such a small work is the signature of artists of great talent such as Joseph Vernet or Lacroix of Marseille to whom our watercolor is attributed. His works are present in the greatest museums, and particularly sought after on the art market.
The leaf is framed in a beautiful gilded wooden baguette from the Louis XVI period, certainly original.
Dimensions with baguette: 23 X 16.5 cm
