The stoning of Saint Stephen, 17th century School of François VERDIER (1651-1730) Beautiful 17th century French representation of the stoning of Saint Stephen, oil on canvas. Excellent and rare ancient representation of the saint considered to be the Protomartyr or the first martyr of Christianity. Here St Stephen is pictured the instant before his death by stoning after Jewish authorities (left) accused him of blasphemy for teaching Christianity. On the right a young Saul of Tarsus witness to martyrdom, Saul will later become Paul the Apostle (St Paul). The condition is good for its age, professional relining thanks to the possibility of improving details and tones with cleaning. Without frame Dimensions: 39cm x 28cm without frame approximately
