Adolphe Albert was born on June 28, 1855 in Paris rue de Montholon, to Jean-Pierre François Balthazar Eugène Albert, merchant, and to Tomasa Isabelle Berasar1. He began his life by embracing a military career: in 1873, he enlisted as a hunter, then, over the years, was promoted to lieutenant (1888), captain (1895), battalion commander (1911). In October 1893, Adolphe married Léontine Vert (Renée Vert known as 1856-1930) whose portrait Lautrec painted the same year (La Modiste Renée Vert). In February 1894, Lautrec and Albert both went to visit the museums of Holland. In December 1897, Adolphe painted a pencil portrait of his friend (Albi, Toulouse-Lautrec museum). In response, Lautrec, for his part, painted a portrait of Adolphe entitled Le Lithographe ou le Bon Graveur, a lithograph published by Boussod, Manzi, Joyant, Goupil & Cie. Meanwhile, in February 1891, Adolphe Albert, who embarked on engraving, became the secretary of the Society of French painters-engravers. After Lautrec's death in 1901, he moved shortly to Giverny where he met Claude Monet, then, with his wife, he moved to Les Andelys, where he bought an estate, the villa Les Tilleuls; after the war, many friendly artists such as Félix Vallotton and Jean-Eugène Clary met there, and he organized exhibitions bringing together paintings by post-impressionist painters.
