Using a type popularized by several artists including Giovanni della Robbia or the Master of the Unruly Children (Sandro di Lorenzo), our little boy or putto is seated on a rocky base, his hand on an oil lamp, the cover of which he keeps on his right leg.
Terracotta groups or subjects depicting children, especially young boys, were popular decorative items in early Renaissance Italy, especially Florence, and are associated with fertility vows.
