He began his classes at the National School of Decorative Arts in Paris in 1913, but in 1914 he interrupted his studies to go and fight in war. After the conflict, he collaborated with some humorous newspapers under the pseudonym of Jimmy Savin. He exhibited for the first time at the Vildrac gallery in Paris. At that time, his synthetic research was in progress: he simplified the palette by using only six or seven colors. He produced large canvases and painted murals in Angoulême in 1922-23. He made his debut at the Salon d'Automne by exhibiting regularly and by becoming an associate as well as at the Salon des Tuileries from 1932. The French State and museums inaugurated a policy of purchasing his works which will be constant. In 1936, he made the grand staircase of the town hall of Montélimar. He studied the technique of ceramics for several months in the factories of Sèvres and befriended the Spanish artist Artigas. For the Sèvres pavilion at the 1937 exhibition, he painted a porcelain stoneware ceiling representing taste.
During the Second World War he tackled the art of upholstery and became administrator of the Manufacture des Gobelins without stopping to paint and work with ceramics. He undertakes a few trips, to Holland in 1945, to Cairo in 1948 where he stops to teach the art of upholstery at the School of Fine Arts in the city. His work La Chasse enters the Cairo Museum. He is also interested in engraving and since 1949 he exhibits at the Society of French Painters and Engravers. In 1952, he traveled to Italy and received the Sestri Levante Grand Prix for painting. In 1953, he was invited to the Salon of Painters Witnesses of their time to which he was faithful for several years. Until the early 1970s, he continuously participated in group exhibitions and organized personal exhibitions in the most prestigious galleries in Paris.
