"Daniel Saint (french, 1778 - 1847), Attr., Miniature Portrait Of A Young Nobleman"
This masterfully portrait miniature on ivory was executed in the early 19th century and have very close stilistic criteria to be attributed to the hand of well-known French miniaturist of the first half of 19th centuryDaniel Saint. For comparison see additional images.
He studied by Isabey, Regnaults, Augustin and Aubry. Court painter by Napoleon, one of the best miniature portrait painters of his time.
Saint was not only appreciated in the Empire period, but also became one of the most popular miniaturists under Charles X and Louis-Philippe, whose portraits he did on several occasions. Schidlof says further: "...Saint may be considered as one of the greatest French miniaturists of the 19th century. He was very close to equalling Isabey and Augustin...".

Works by him situated in museums : Louvre, Paris (M-me E.Jullien,nee Beauvalet; Ludwig Philipp); Rome, Museo napoleonico (portrait of Charlotte and Zenaide Bonaparte) ; museum in Vire.

Literature:Benezit "Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs"; Thieme/Becker "Allgemeines Lexikon der bildenden Künstler..".

Technique:Gouache on ivory, framed in original empire wood frame with bronze oval mount, and protuberant glass, the frame is due to the quality and style said to be by Alphonse Giroud, Paris.
Measurements:unframed 7x 8 cm, framed 15 x 17,5 cm.
