Object description :

"François Édouard Picot - Portrait Of A Captain Of The 63rd Line Regiment In 1828 - Hst 80x69cm"
French School from the beginning of the 19th century, portrait of an officer sitting at his desk, holding in his hand a pair of fresh butter-colored skin gloves. On the table his shako decorated with the arms of France allows his unit to be identified , the 63rd line regiment, under the reign of Charles X. He is its captain, commanding the 2nd battalion of the 2nd company. This regiment was stationed in Marseille in 1827. We also recognize under the shako the guard of his regulatory saber. The painting is presented in an early 19th century frame. in the lower right corner, Picot's signature and the date 1828. François Édouard Picot is a neoclassical painter from the first half of the 19th century. Both a history painter, genre painter and portrait painter, he was a student of François-André Vincent and Jacques-Louis David at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He received the second Grand Prix de Rome in 1811, then the Prix d'honneur in 1813. Returning to Paris after his stay in Rome at the Villa Medici, he exhibited L'Amour et Psyché at the Salon of 1819 (a sketch of which can be found in in Dijon at the Magnin museum) and painted the same year La Mort de Saphire for the Saint-Séverin church in Paris. He was elected member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1836 and continued to exhibit his paintings at the Salon until 1839. He decorated with Hippolyte Flandrin the Saint-Vincent-de-Paul church in Paris and painted with wax the fresco depicting The Pilgrims of Emmaus for the Parisian church of Saint-Denys-du-Saint-Sacrement. He also produces paintings and frescoes for the Louvre Museum, the Palace of Versailles and the Luxembourg Palace. His works are still exhibited in all these buildings and palaces and at the Louvre Museum. Beautiful portrait with very careful craftsmanship, very expressive face. Great care given to the details of the uniform. Beautiful piece of amateur or collection. Table in very good condition, on its original canvas, cleaned and unpainted. Wooden frame gilded with gold leaf cleaned by our gilder. Frame dimensions 80 x69cm Canvas dimension 65.5cm x55cm
