Beautiful limestone STATUE in Italian Gothic style representing Saint Zacharias in full length, holding censer and leafy branch.
Height: 64 cm.
ITALY (?), XIX th century.

Very good quality of sculpture with drape and accessories of great finesse, in perfect condition.

Zachariah was the father of Saint John the Baptist and the husband of Saint Elizabeth. Priest, it was while he was performing his service that the angel Gabriel came to tell him that he could finally have the long-awaited child. Zacharie doubts it so strongly because of his great age that he became silent until the day of the birth of John the Baptist.
