"Bamboo Book Called Lontar. Bali, Indonesia, 19th Century Asia"
Book made up of a wooden or bamboo cover whose pages are formed from the leaves of the latanier better known under the name of the traveller's tree. The word "LONTAR" means in fact : "leaf of latanier".Such works dealt with medicine, astrology, magic, religion and made it possible to transmit knowledge from generation to generation, particularly in the Indonesian Islands including Java, Bali or Lombok. The leaves are engraved with characters coated with a mixture of oil and ash.
The characters in Old Javanese are derived from Sanskrit.
