Tuscany, first half of the 17th century
Oil painting on canvas
Canvas 84 x 62 frame 90 x 68
This 17th century canvas depicting a very attractive Magdalen is a truly fascinating painting which, while showing the iconographic attributes of her repentance, expresses an overwhelming femininity. The splendid features, the wide open eyes and the loose hair as well as the pose which seems to offer her body, are in the image of seduction. The woman's message of temptation is evident as are the references to the penance of the skull and the crucifix. The Author is endowed with a great capacity for communication and the work is distinguished by an unusual lightness in the portrayal of a theme often marked by exasperated suffering. We are certainly in front of an excellent example of Tuscan Baroque painting from the beginning of the 17th century and the angelic face of the Magdalen with her long curly hair is reminiscent of the magnificent figures of Lippi and Botticelli in a 17th century reinterpretation.
The canvas is in good condition and the signs of time do not disturb the reading of the painting which still offers all its pictorial and chromatic characteristics.
