The Buddha and other figures are depicted in long robes with carved draperies, and the composition resembles the Hellenistic friezes of the temples of the Greek and Roman gods. The head of Buddha is surrounded by a halo and all the other figures face it. The sculptor represented the figures in a relatively naturalistic way, although their form is now somewhat blurred by time (erosion of the stone). The art of the ancient region of Gandhara is often referred to as Greco-Buddhist art, as the people of Gandhara were largely inspired by Greek art, and the oldest known representations of the Buddha in this region, dating from the 1st century AD, are often compared to Greek statues of Apollo.
