** Russia late 19th century **
An almost identical model, less richly decorated and not gilded, unlike the one we are selling here, was appraised and estimated at Hôtel Drouot in 2019. It was presented as bearing the hallmark of the Fabergé goldsmith's workshop.
Our goldsmith's piece bears a goldsmith's hallmark three times, one on the 'lip' bordering the slot for inserting the coins, another on the closure fitting and a final, almost illegible one affixed to the reverse of the object (see photo).
In addition to the goldsmith's hallmarks, the swan import hallmark is stamped 3 times on the lid, body and fittings (the legal hallmark for silver objects of foreign origin).
We have not found a Russian title mark or any other mark, but it is clear that this object belongs to Russian silversmiths.
* The very similar money box sold at Hôtel Drouot in 2019 (see the last two photos) did bear Russian silver hallmarks; it was identified as silver 84 zolotniks (875 thousandths). Moscow, 1899-1908.
* Goldsmith: bears a Fabergé hallmark. Weight: 107.3 g; Height: 8 cm
* Estimate: EUR 2,000 - 3,000.
Our money box weighs : 100.43 g for a height of 8cm
You can see that one of the photos shows the goldsmith's hallmark, which we personally have not been able to identify.
We are therefore selling this money box as a Russian goldsmith's item, but without any certainty as to its provenance from Carl Fabergé's workshop.
