"Genia Type Mignon 1930 Indexed Typewriter With Its Transport Box"
The GENIA model is identical in design to the MIGNON machine which is "the mother of all indexed typewriters." Appeared on the market very late, in 1905, but remained very popular until the last year of production in 1934. The principle is very simple. It combines a typographic sleeve with a full character set and a card with a pointer and two (later three) keys. Point the pointer at a letter on the index and press the key to print a letter on the paper and advance the carriage. With little practice, the operator could achieve a write speed of at least 100 strokes per minute. The index card and typed text could be replaced to change fonts and use character sets for different languages, and it combined the simplicity of the most primitive indexers with the ruggedness of a well-made office machine. In fact, it was a real alternative to the much more expensive keyboard machines in early 20th century offices. And because of the interchangeable fonts, the machine was a very handy tool for jobs that required the use of different fonts. Its only competitor for this work was the much more expensive Hammond typewriter. »The GENIA machine is from the 1930s. It is in good working order and its general appearance makes it a beautiful collector's item or of art deco decoration. It has its original carrying case with wrist and brass closure system also in good condition.
