"Jacques Chereau , Optical View Of The Pont Neuf Or The Arsenal Of Toulon Seen From The Angle Of The Artillery Park"
Beautiful optical view representing the Pont Neuf or the Toulon arsenal, seen from the corner of the artillery park. This 18th century engraving is the work of Jacques Chereau dit Chereau the younger, born October 29, 1688 and died December 1, 1776 in Paris at the age of 88. He was a designer engraver with etching and chisel, publisher and merchant of prints, established in the Saint Jacques district at number 257. His engravings variously bore the stamp "au grand st Remy" "au coq" or as here on our engraving "above the Saint-Séverin fountain". In 1724 he married Marguerite Chiquet as a second wedding, daughter of the engraver Jacques Chiquet and whom he inherited in 1741. Our engraving was made after the painting by Joseph Vernet representing the arsenal of Toulon. The original painting, owned by the Musée de la Marine in Paris, measures 168 cm X 263 cm and is part of the series of 15 French ports commissioned by Louis XV from 1753. Our prints represent the left side of this painting.
