Romberg quitte sa Belgique natale pour se rendre à Tétouan en 1887, puis à Meknès et Marrakech. Il voyagera trois ans à travers l’empire Chérifien en compagnie de l’archéologue Henri de la Martinière. Ce fut le premier peintre européen à vivre à Marrakech où il acquiert une notoriété avec ses scènes de cortèges royaux, de festivités et évènements populaires sous l’égide du général Lyautey à partir de 1912. Après les villes impériales, il s’établira dix ans à Tanger avant de retourner en Europe.
Aquarelliste brillant, il signa également des affiches.
La bibliothèque Royale à Rabat possède des aquarelles et le M.A.O. de Paris également, dont une Fantasia en l’honneur du Sultan Moulay Hassan en 1891 à Marrakech en rapport avec notre aquarelle présentée ici.

Romberg left his native Belgium to go to Tetouan in 1887, then to Meknes and Marrakech. He will travel for three years through the Chérifien Empire in the company of the archaeologist Henri de la Martinière. He was the first European painter to live in Marrakech where he acquired notoriety with his scenes of royal processions, festivities and popular events under the aegis of General Lyautey from 1912. After the imperial cities, he settled for ten years in Tangier before returning to Europe. A brilliant watercolorist, he also signed posters. The Royal Library in Rabat has watercolors and the MAO of Paris also, including a Fantasia in honor of Sultan Moulay Hassan in 1891 in Marrakech in connection with our watercolor presented here.
