"Small Alsatian Baroque Wardrobe With Three Columns Early 17th Century."
Small cabinet of architectural form with three columns, inlaid with native woods such as maple, ash and walnut burls on a frame of oak and solid walnut. This cabinet is made up of two side bodies assembled in the middle part by tongue and groove. The unified whole rests on a base where slide two small juxtaposed drawers, resting on flattened ball feet. The whole is capped with a straight and overhanging cornice and convex ogee. The main body is flanked by three columns resting on grotesque masks; two lateral and one central. The latter acting as a dormant at the doors. This is set back from the side columns, each of them is adorned with false architectural windows with inlaid decoration of architectural perspectives surmounted by winged putti heads. This magnificent work of a master cabinetmaker and completed by a very careful work of locksmithing. Indeed an exceptional openwork lock with chiseled plate provided with its original key accompany serrated and chiseled fittings equally finely worked. The plain decoration of the columns makes it possible to date this cabinet from before 1650, because subsequently they become ringed at first and then in spirals at the end of the great century. Alsatian work from the first part of the 17th century, around 1640. Height 212cm, width 159cm, depth 58.5cm. It should be noted that this type of cupboard and usually monumental because of state furniture, majestic very luxurious, It signified the & stature and the wealth of its owners. As a result, the small size of our 212cm cabinet is a rare piece.
