Iranian rug from the Arak region, Kurk * wool, cotton warp and weft, 1950-60. Very good state. Format zaronim. Fine work. Strong and durable mat.Saroughs are rugs held in high regard for their quality of wool, designs and colors. These rugs have different decorative patterns like medallions but most often based on a floral theme. This elegant sarough composed of a mihrab is distinguished by its decoration, on a navy blue background. A multitude of flowers and foliage are in harmony with the motifs of vases, cups and the two scimitars ** (symmetrical in the center of the carpet). These different patterns correspond to the traditional 'zilralki' design *** made on tabrizs and which subsequently on Kashmar rugs. At the top of the mat, six botehs **** merge to form the top of the mihrab. Two small herati borders (flowers) frame a wider border with motifs of vases and foliage, on a dark red background, This sarough shows the refined work and the sensitivity of the Persian weavers.
* Kurk wool: fine lamb's wool collected by combing. Strong and durable wool.
** Scimitar: oriental saber with a curved blade.
*** Zilralki: motif representing excavation objects: vases, columns, ruins ... On the kashmars, it refers to Persepolis.
**** Boteh: Ancient motif with different meanings. It can represent the transformation of Zoroaster into a cypress, symbol of eternity, but also into a drop of water, a palm, a tree. The term boteh means "flowering bush" in Persian. There is a similarity to yin and yang.
