Oil on canvas of horizontal rectangular shape from the Aix countryside by painter Philippe Marbeau, signed lower left, P Marbeau; relining on original frame set in its gilded wood frames treated in amati and burnished. Two gossips conversing at the edge of the road near a pond in the Aix countryside; one on a mule loaded with straw hoods, the other on foot, a wicker basket at the bottom. In the distance, we can make out the tumult of the market. In 1835, the painter Philippe Marbeau, originally from Brivela-Gaillarde, had just settled in Provence. A former pupil of François-Édouard Picot in Paris, he befriended the painter Émile Loubon, originally from Aix-en-Provence and close to François-Marius Granet. Settled permanently in Provence, Philippe Marbeau became an adopted Marseillais and regularly participated in the Salon between 1842 and 1855. A member of the Académie du Var, he received some laudatory comments for his works. Some of his contemporaries mention that eternally dissatisfied with his work, he painted day and night and became irascible and unstable. In love with his art to the point of madness, he ended his days in a Marseille asylum. Frame dimension width 53cm, height 41cm - Frame width 40.5cm, height 30.5cm.
