"La Sarthe, le matin à Saint-Céneri" Oil on canvas signed lower left Mary Renard (1849-1925). Dimensions: 55x38 cm without frame (Period framing) Marie Céleste Prudent Renard known as "Mary Renard", born August 23, 1849 in Colonard-le-Buisson and died October 10, 1925 in Alençon, is a painter and curator at the museum of Alencon. His parents are farmers. He lost his father at the age of 7 and his mother a few years later. He took part in the war of 1870, on his return he married and chose to go and live in Alençon. He participated in the Salon in 1880 and exhibited Autumn in Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei. He was admitted to the Salon of French artists in 1890 and became a member in 1894. He would call himself the pupil of Paul Saïn. He chose the landscapes of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei for his paintings which he presented at the Salon of 1897. Attached to the local architectural heritage, Mary Renard was curator of the Alençon museums in 1910. He is the founding president of the Company Friends of the Arts. He died on October 10, 1925 in his studio at 38, rue du Jeudi in Alençon. “He left an abundant work, much appreciated during his lifetime abroad, especially in Germany, Austria and even the United States1. We can see some of his paintings in museums, Alençon2, Saint-Vaast-la-Hougue3 and works painted directly on the walls of the Auberge des Peintres in the village of Saint-Céneri-le-Gérei. A street in Alençon, the Allée Mary-Renard, bears his name.
